The vessel was built in Portland around 1965. She was designed by Jack Pompei from Mordialloc in Melbourne and built as a fishing boat to work the Bass Strait area out of Robe in South Australia. She was decommissioned from fishing in the early 1990's and remained moored in Robe harbour until purchased in 1999 and transported overland to Pompei's in Mordialloc.

OUR CLASSIC HERRESHOFF COMES HOME.
Francis is a beautiful hand built Herreshoff Leeboard Ketch. The original owner was an engineer who produced all the bronze fittings himself to Herreshoff designs. She was built (though not completely fitted out) in Sydney over a 7 years period before being launched in 1989 and taken to Bellingen where she was stored in a purpose built shed for 6 years. According to the timber yard Strahan Tasmania most of the planks are 30’ feet long and some are 2000 years old.
