Iolanthe 11 - $25,000

Iolanthe 11

Iolanthe II is a Sparkman and Stephens design “Pipedream” sloop built around 1972-1975 in Victoria. Her design is featured in the very famous classic yacht design book “Skene’s Elements of Yacht Design.” She is built to the specifications given in the book. She is 36 ft 7 inches long, with a 10 ft 6 beam and a 6 ft draft.

She sails beautifully, as you would expect. She has a 48 ft oregon mast and an 18 ft oregon boom. She is carvel planked of jarrah hardwood with spotted gum frames. Her fastenings are copper and she has monel keel bolts. The deck is plywood and painted with waterproof paint. The cabin sides are mahogony. There are 2 large Barlow winches in the cockpit and 2 bronze halyard winches on the mast. She has a backstay, an innner and outer forestay and cap and intermediate shrouds. The sails are in good condition. She has optional runners attached for bad weather.

The mainsail has 2 reefs and the boom has 2 reefing winches attached. All the rigging is stainless steel. There is a 4 man Beaufort liferaft. There is a brass and hardwood rubbing rail all around the decks. There is a solar cell on the deck for battery charging. There are two large clear wooden hatches, one over the galley and dinette, and the other over the main forward cabin. The boat is powered by a Bukh 27 hp diesel in good condition. It is fitted to a V drive to allow it the go under the cockpit. The motor can be accessed completely on all sides. It sits well above the bilge to reduce corrosion. There are 2 N70Z size batteries. There are 5 single berths, 3 in the main saloon and 2 large quarter berths. There is a separate forward cabin with a wardrobe and cupboard and a large double v berth. It has a large hatch for ventilation.

The main saloon has plenty of space for about 8 people to sit. It has a number of rattan covered cupboards and a fold down chart table. There is a 2.5 metre long galley with a 2 burner metho stove, an ice chest, a sink and plenty of bench space for food preparation. There is a dinette opposite, which can seat 4 people. There is a very large bronze steering compass (from a ship) and a hand bearing compass. There is a VHF radio, with the aerial on top of the mast. There is a 35 lb plough anchor and a smaller kedge anchor. There is a lot of 3/8” chain housed in the bilge. There is also an electric-manual Muir Cheetah anchor winch. Iolanthe II is Australian registered and NSW registered. The last survey was about 2 years ago.

The boat is located at Laurieton, 35 km south of Port Macquarie in NSW. Quoted from an article on this design boat " Francis S. Kinney (1915-1993) penned this unmistakably classic cruising sloop in 1960 while working in the offices of Sparkman and Stephens. She’s a well-behaved and versatile boat; her timeless seaworthy traits make her a safe choice for offshore work. The Pipedream 37 has all the pleasing lines of classic sloops of its era that you’d expect; large overhangs, low freeboard, and a very sweet sheer line.

For the conservative minded cruiser it offers excellent tracking and structural integrity. Despite the age of the design, the boat is no laggard; surprising given its relatively short LWL and increased wetted area of its modified full keel and classic wine shape sections. The boat is exceptionally well balanced with finger-on-tiller tracking and a responsive helm. “
