Lucille - $60,000

Lucille is a 31 foot raised deck sharpie built from spotted gum with original Queensland silky oak fit-out and white beech laid decks.

Building started on this vessel in 1945 during the Second World War.

Lucille was built for Ted Mills, by Ted Mills, Stuart Watson and Terry, Don and George Kretchman. All the men were working for ‘Watson Wright Boat Builders.’ Lucille was started as a weekend project and prototype for the proposed new business, ‘Millcraft Boat Builders’.

As the war was still in progress the men were not permitted to leave ‘Watson Wright’ until the war ended. Lucille was named after Ted Mill’s eldest daughter, and was moved to the ‘Millcraft’ yard when the war ended. She was the first boat launched by ‘Millcraft’.

In 1987 Lucille was purchased by a syndicate of four as a much-neglected vessel. Lucille was entirely refurbished using the original survey drawings with no expense spared. The original engine, a Ford Lees was also rebuilt. The rebuild work was carried out under Allan Watson.
In August 1988 she was relaunched and used as a client boat by the syndicate members - all were Brisbane solicitors.

Lucille is recognised as a classic vintage timber bay cruiser. The previous owners, who purchased Lucille in 1996, replaced the Ford Lees engine with a refurbished 80 HP Ford Lehman engine. In 2007, a professional shipwright, Craig Fielding, rebuilt the vessel from the keel to the waterline. The original planking was replaced with double ply sheeting, glued and screwed. The boat was repainted and new fuel tanks were installed.

The present owners have repainted Lucille’s hull below and above the waterline, installed an Icom VHF radio, replaced the gas stove with a Metho stove and maintained Lucille in excellent condition overall.

Lucille has original bronze features, good refrigeration, an electric anchor windlass, pressurised water and very comfortable accommodation for four people. She cruises economically at 8 knots and we have found her to be a very capable bay cruiser.
