Can you help us find “URANA”

24  Mar  2010
Good Afternoon

I read in a recent Club Marine magazine that your club had a Geelong Wooden Boat regatta last weekend. Unfortunately I could not attend as I am in Sydney.

I noted in the article that the festival featured ex pilot boats which caught my attention as I am a Sydney Pilot and own an ex Pilot Boat that had its origins in Melbourne.

Her name is “URANA” and I understand she was build around 1911 and used to transport River Pilots up and down the Yarra. I do not believe she was owned by the river pilots, as they did not own boats, so she was probably used on charter.

I re-built her two years ago and while I have limited some limited knowledge of her history, I am keen to find out more.

I would love to know if any of your wooden boat members have any knowledge of her.

Hopefully one day I will be able to bring her to Geelong for your festival weekend (on a truck)

Kind regards

Geelong Wooden Boat Festival

2  Mar  2010
The Geelong Wooden Boat Festival, to be held during this coming weekend's Labour Day holiday, (March 6th & 7th) is absolutely bulgeing at the water line!

Over one hundred absolutely beautiful, well loved and well cared for, wooden boats have entered this year's festival.

There's boats of every size and shape from a massive brigantine to a tiny steam boat plus all sizes between.

Wooden boats to drool over. Polished, painted, stained, or even just ribs covered in skin! All owners and skippers are bursting to tell you all about their pride and joy - their boat!

It's a massive display of that age old skill of boatbuilding, boat handling and boat care and attention. No wonder boats are called 'She'!! They are all loved so well!

Free access to the public to wander the marina and soak up the atmosphere. There's shore exhibitions and demonstrations of boat building and preservation, rope making, equipment and fitting displays, nautical clothing and supplies on display and for sale. Food & refreshment are available. It's obvious, this is a display YOU must 'knot' miss!.

Cup Regatta 2008 Photos - Roger Dundas & Mark Bergin

5  Dec  2008
Cup Weekend in Melbourne doesn’t mean horse racing for the Classic Yacht Association. For the second year running the Cup Regatta has seen sailors from around the Bay and a host of imports from NZ compete in the Cup Regatta at RYCV.

Keen Classic Yacht Association member, CYA newsletter guru and general all round good bloke Roger Dundas not only sailed a Tumlaren around the course but managed to squeeze of a great set of pictures. Something suggest that Roger must dream about old Fife boats as you'll notice in his photos. This 1897 Fife cutter was almost unbeatable on Port Phillip and became the founding yacht of the Sayonara Cup. A Melbourne syndicate bought her back from Sydney, and gave her a million-dollar refit before re-launching her in 2000. She has since been a regular in classic yacht events.

Nelson's flagship HMS Victory could be handed over to a private company, The News can reveal.
The Ministry of Defence said the 18th century warship was expensive to maintain and that her funding was currently under review.

This could see her passed to a private firm or given to a charity to save cash. The MoD says increasing budgetary pressures mean it must review Victory's future like any other ship.

But a former Commanding Officer of Victory and ex-First Sea Lord said handing over the oldest commissioned warship in the world to a private company would make a mockery of Portsmouth's naval heritage.\

Greater access to Williamstown waterfront

12  Feb  2008

The proposal, which includes the development of the derelict Knights Slipway site and potential marina upgrade to the Royal Victorian Motor Yacht Club and Hobson’s Bay Yacht Club, would open up a section of the waterfront that has been off-limits to the public for over 100 years, allow for the ecologically-sound expansion of both clubs and significantly increase facilities in the area.

Fairwinds took line honours from Mercedes III, Scimitar 3rd, and Wanita 4th across the line. Gemfish continues to be right up there with the big boys.

Then the handicapper got to the times and the big boats continued to shine – some of them would say about time.

Wooden Boat Festival - Hobart - Feb 2007

3  Aug  2006
I can't believe it has come around so quickly. It's only 18 months since the last event, but it's on again! I've heard lots of discussion about who's going to sail down, who's driving down and those of us that will be flying down. As you can imagine, the good rooms might already be booked and those that aren't will go soon - so don't delay. Also, for anyone keen to enter their boat, the registration deadline is 31st October so don't miss it.

I'm sure there will be a few readers that haven't been to the festival. It's a great event with lots of boats, a Wooden Boatshop party and other Couta Boat Association events making for quite a full weekend. If you are planning to visit you might need to take the Monday off to recover!

Sailing old wooden boats

7  Apr  2005
Coutabeen Paris, 24 ft Couta Boat, circa 1947
A request for information from Malcolm Bristow

One of the real joys of sailing old wooden boats is the different ways they all behave while still belonging to a single class. Each boat has it’s own style and attitude in changing winds and seas. My father taught me to sail on very similar boats to the Couta, on the Norfolk Broads in the UK at the age of 12. Not being very strong at that age I had to lean how to manage the boat with the minimum of physical effort.
