History

Huon Seal is a beautiful example of the “Grey Seal” design from the pen of internationally respected designer Iain Oughtred.

While guest lecturer at the US WoodenBoat School, Iain was commissioned by the school to design a small coastal cruiser. She was to be seaworthy, robust and capable of being carried on a trailer.

Drawing on experience gained during a recent tour of Scandinavia (and the centuries of experience gained by Scandinavian fishermen in the waters of the North Atlantic) Iain produced the lines of the ‘Grey Seal”.

One of the most admired of Iain’s designs, few have been built in Australia. Where they have been, they rarely change hands.


Huon Seal was built in the Huon Valley in 2002 by two woodwork teachers under the supervision of a tutor from the Wooden Boat School at Franklin. She has been built, in the words of her surveyor, “ to the best of boat building practices, using first class materials throughout”.

Huon Seal came into my care in 2005. Since I have owned her I have modified her to suit single handed sailing in the waters of South West Tasmania.

Her rig has been converted to twin furling headsails with the jib set from a bowsprit. She now has boom gallows, and all lines lead back to two pin rails either side of the companionway. Sails can be raised, set and reefed/furled without leaving the safety of the cockpit
