History

Built for Charles Mackinnon in 1936, for 180 pounds plus 12d 15s 3p for fitting an engine. Designed to be beamier than the usual for the purpose of carrying passengers; she was registered to take 28 people. Charles’ son Ted (1911-1989) an Honourary Life Member of the Couta Boat Club, worked the Mermerus for many years holding a professional fishing licence for 59 years. He had a camp at fisherman’s beach Portsea, netting salmon trout, mullet and sometimes yellowtail. Mermerus was initially used to ferry workers to Queenscliff & fishing during the day. Fishing charters became her mainstay working from Sorrento Pier and often taking guests from Whitehall (where Ted’s wife to be once worked). Fish were sold from Coppin’s Jetty the sea baths operated by fellow Couta man Tally Erlandsen. Mermerus was used as a workboat, Ted servicing virtually all moorings from Portsea to Blairgowrie using the boat. At one stage there was only one jetty in the area not built by him and using the Mermerus to carry the timbers. Together with the Ariel at Portland by the late 1980s, Mermerus was one of the last of the Couta Boats still working, the commercial raison d’etre having been lost and demands of fishing under sail being lost to larger powered craft.

Race Record

Sporting her old sails and rig Mermerus sailed in the first Portsea Fishing Boat Regatta in 1975 and served as an inspiration for many, over the following years.
