History |
One of3 built by Ken as a racing class for Frankston in 1939.It was a bad year for a new class , and after the War it did not improve--numbers stayed at 3. Whichever this one is its name started with Rose , but it was not Rosebud. The names were Rosealea,Rosemarie and ?, hence Rosebud, because mine had no name, just the impression of the namepate. The original rig was 33 odd ft stemhead Bermudan, which had a bit much weather helm but did point high It looks very nice with its spoon bow counter stern and low freeboard .At the moment it has a gaff rig but Ihave a new mast for the Bermudan rig, which will be interesting considering the light ballast, which probably should be 500 lbs. I spoke to an old bloke at Sandringham who used to push the Rose Class boats out of the creek on race days.Construction is Qld Kauri-- the mast is keel stepped but I think it should be in a Tabernacle. Ken was very proud of the Rose cass and very disappointed that it did not prosper as the Jubilee beater he envisioned. |

Race Record |
They were to be a race fleet, and ken was very proud of his rose class.his best moment was outsailing an early cunningham cat because it could not point , but a rose class can point very high, whether gaff or bermudan rigged. |

the plate case has been cut short at some stage and now has a ballasted plywood plate, which is really good. The deck is dynel covered ply which looks original and protects the boat . It has an old bolt-on cuddy as well which is not fitted . Max Hand , the previous owner , made a new under hung stainless rudder and shaft , which I fitted when I re-rigged it togaff rig, and put on the new deck and centreplate. It does point very high , even gaff rigged, and has a very delicate , balanced feel.
